Make sure your goods and cargo are insured in transit.
Goods in Transit Insurance covers merchandise in transit worldwide from A to B. It can cover from Warehouse to Warehouse or from Ships side to Ships side.
Goods are normally carried under ‘Conditions of Carriage’ and any insurance should fully cover those conditions. Transits by road and rail, are generally insured differently to those by sea and air. Businesses transporting their own goods will also need Goods in Transit (GIT) insurance and generally, those goods are insured on an ‘all risks’ basis.
Goods in Transit cover is additional to commercial vehicle or courier insurance. Those policies cover the vehicle itself, whereas GIT insurance covers the contents, coverings, lashings and can include your costs for freight charges.
Some van or courier insurance policies do include an element of goods in transit cover, but only up to a certain value. As the name suggests, GIT insurance only covers goods while they are in transit, not while they are in the depot, but will cover the goods once they are loaded on the vehicle/vessel etc for transport.
Speak with us to ensure that you have a policy which insures your goods for the whole journey. Don’t assume a buyer or seller has a suitable policy at their end, they may expect that it is your responsibility.
